Elizabeth Anderson, LICSW

I believe that psychotherapy helps people face what is difficult in their lives. Beyond providing relief and support, successful therapy leads to greater spontaneity and personal flexibility, to an increased sense of agency and purpose, and to more satisfying personal relationships. I see clients of all ages with complex personal histories who often present with anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. Together we form a working partnership in support of greater self knowledge and growth.

I use an active approach in sessions, integrating psychodynamic, family systems, and humanistic theories. In recent years I have trained more extensively in couples therapy and in Internal Family Systems therapy, a method especially helpful in treating anxiety and panic. In addition to helping individuals and couples with relationships, I specialize in treating couples facing separation or divorce, as well as those considering remarriage and blending families.

In private practice since 1991 and at Tapestry since 1997, I have also worked at the Ohio State University and Emerson College in student life and at Harvard University teaching undergraduate psychology courses in adolescent development and human sexuality. My clinical experience includes working as a senior clinician and supervisor at the Cambridge Guidance Center with children, adolescents and families, many from Portuguese speaking immigrant communities. Additionally I have worked with veterans at the Boston Outpatient VA clinic, and as a consultant to after school programs in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
